I had a conversation yesterday with a good friend of mine about our exceptional talent—painting with words and creating whole new worlds with nothing but words. We both reached a conclusion that we have not been working as hard and as much as we should. We have somehow allowed complacency and to some extent sheer laziness to stiffle our progress. Of course, we cannot attribute all the lack of progress to complacency and laziness. School has been driving us hard too; like a cruel master who has a problem seeing their servant relaxing. School in our country is anything but easy. It is probably the hardest in the whole world. And if you think I'm exerggerating, be my guest. Anyway, away with my country's evil education system. The conversation with my friend was sparked after I checked my website and found more than one article submitted to the website by a Laura Mackenzie from London. I jokingly told my friend that she had beaten him by submitting more pages than he has ( apparently he has submitted nothing yet). I pointed out that this Laura has execptional talent that should be exposed to the whole world. Something good is in the offing for Laura—I can feel it. The talk of London inadvertently brought us to the issue of kings. I was reminded of wise words of King Solomon from Proverbs 22:29 where he said, "Do you see a man skilful in his work? he will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.". Taking this as reference, I pointed out that whatever it is that we do, if we put our minds to it, and work at it wholeheartedly, we will achieve great results. Indeed, if we are skilful at what we do, no matter what it is, we will find ourselves standing before kings and not common place men. That, I pointed out, is what we should aim to achieve. You are probably thinking I am talking from without. Okay, I have a few examples to substantiate my point. Ever heard of Bill Gates? Of course you have. He is one of the richest men in the world. He's probably the greatest richest man of our time. Anyone in their right frame of mind would definitely want to be associated with this billionaire. But just so you know, Mr. Gates was not born a billionaire. What Mr. Gates simply did was to take advantage of his God-given talent. As a young man, Mr.Gates was approached by IBM to to make them a computer software and young Gates jumped at the opportunity, and the rest, as they say, is history. If you are a staunch soccer fan then I don't need to explain who Cristiano Ronaldo is.He's currently the most expensive player in the world. Ronaldo is a hero for a vast number of football supporters. Football clubs would pay millions of pounds just to have him playing for their side. And as long as Ronaldo maintains his form, he will continue raking millions through his talent. If you are a movie buff you will agree that Angelina Jolie is the most ravishing actress to hit the big screen since Marylin Monroe. However, Angelina Jolie isn't famous for her looks. Many describe Angelina Jolie as one of the greatest female actress of our time. Nearly all the movies she has featured in are hits. Again, Miss Jolie is living her dream thanks to her God-given talent. Pretty much everyone knows Michael Jackson. MJ is no doubt the greatest entertainer of all time. His music is loved by fans of all ages. Even those who never liked him fail to resist thumping their feet and nodding their heads whenever they hear his music play. The reson is pretty much obvious. This guy produced some of the best songs this world has ever heard. Though Michael is gone his music will live on and 20 or so years from now, the people will still be buying his music. Which individual comes to your mind when you think of golf. Let me guess. Tiger Woods right? Before this talented golfer fell from grace, the whole golfing world bowed before him. Though Tiger's scandle has dented his reputation, it is no moot point that he is still the king of the greens. You see, there is nothing Tiger can do about how the world perceive him at the moment. All Tiger needs to do is get back to what he does best. I can guarantee you that once Tiger put his house in order and start winning championships, even those firms and organisations that have parted company with him will be knocking at his door trying to have him sign some contract. And the reason is simple. Everyone wants to be associated with greatness. The list is endless, and I coud go on forever; but I am sure you got my point. You see, not all of us can be musicians, or golfers, actors, footballers, or computer wizards. However, each one of us is blessed with a talent. The most important thing is not really what talent we have been blessed with, but how we use it. I have deliberately skipped giving an examlpe of any writer out there. And it is not that noone has ever made it big through writing. The reason is simple. You and I know that the world cannot do without us writers.Imagine what would happen if all writers put their pens down.No movie will be produced without a writer. No news can be produced without a writer. See, the world needs us more than we need them. Don't waste your time knocking on the world's door. All you need is to recognize your talent, work on it day and night and before you know it, the world will be knocking at your door. And in no time you will be standing before kings—literally. My friend and I are tired of talking about what needs to be done. So we have decided to go right on ahead and do it. Yes, he is going to start submitting his articles to the website cause I truly believe the world can make use of his talent. I will make sure that he gets on with it even if it takes me breathing on his neck day and night. So to all of you writers out there, grab your pens tight. If life is a battle we can only fight with our pens, right? Put pen to paper. Spread the Word!Let all those you know who have a thing for writing know about Writer Digest. Forward this zine to them.
