Poem # 1.

The Day Sunshine Came

By LJ Kundananji

For a while, a small, painful little while,

My life was full of darkness and everything vile.

Intently, everyday, I searched and sought for thee

But I looked in all wrong places and you eluded me.

There were birds, they seemed to resemble you;

All the colours you love: pink, green and blue…

Alas, I called day and night, but they weren’t forthcoming,

And to perch on my bare, dry shoulder they weren’t a-coming.

Dark darkness, sad sorrow and lonely loneliness I ate;

Uncouth emotions tore my heart in shreds, and this my fate;

And as time wore on, I desired to demise, to be late

'Cause I thought thee was not reality but dream.

Ever heard the lark sing its sad serenade at dawn?

This I did too, when all else was lost, at your window…

When no one would give a hearing ear

I crawled on my knees, staring on, with no little fear;

My arms outstretched to you as my sad serenade sang.

And after I was done, you sang your jaunty song aloud,

You laughed hearty and long, and my head in shame I hang.

I knew a bird with so beautiful plumage could never be mine,

There were others bigger and better, and those you laid your eyes upon.

I was nothing save a helpless dreamer to love the divine.

As I turned, walked away, I felt a tingle, tickle and touch;

The softness of your pert feet on my shoulder

As you alighted upon them, my lowly shoulders,

And as you smiled, ever so mighty, ever so broad,

I knew you had loved my soulful serenade;

My heart melted at the heat of your love and bled

‘Cause I had never known nor felt such love;

That day you came into my life, so did sunshine,

It shines in my heart, day by day everyday

And since then, I have never known the great gloomy glumness of darkness.

Poem # 2

Brave Billy The Bold

By LJ Kundananji

Bold Billy was a brave sailor;

He steered his mighty ship with a stern eye

Venturing onto vast oceans with his valiant men.

He was no foolhardy fellow and knew no folly,

Bad pirates he plundered, the good made partners.

Brave Billy the bold was loved by all the land folk

And hated by the heathen of heinous ways…

But one fine fair day, Billy met his fate;

His men soon sought sour and dastardly deeds,

A vile idea they begot, turned glum and gunned him down

And Brave Billy the bold was no more for aye

Poem # 3

Why do I Breath with Ease?

By Lj Kundananji

Why do I breathe with ease?

My eyes open: why do I see?

Slow, subtle, silent - time creeps;

And I know not 'till the set time beeps;

At which time these eyes of mine I'll shut forever.

Still, solemn, silent - like exist I never;

At which time mine foes will feign sorrow;

And yet sheer joy thereafter will follow.

Sad, somber, silent - mine lovers will stand;

And good things to say they'll find;

At which time all bad forgotten.

Praise, pamper, pride - these they'll shower my corpse;

And if I could hear, I'd be glad I died!

At which time I'd smile as in my coffin I'm downed.

Dead, done, deceased - yes I will be;

And I'll truly be forgotten, me;

At which time I'll be as though I never was.
