Can you be a writer? Yes you can! You can be that writer that you have always dreamt of being.
I strongly believe that anyone can be a writer, and like I always say: if you enjoy writing, then you are, without the shadow of the doubt, a writer.
Now, just stop for a moment and imagine that you are a creator. Imagine what you could do…
You could create your own world and your own people. Your world can be anything and everything that you want it to be. Your people can be everything that you want them to be and you can put them in every situation you want them to be in. They say that you are limited by your imagination. But the question is: does imagination have a limit?
Hmmm…
So just imagine for a brief moment that you are a creator. Does it sound all too good to be true, and perhaps a little, say, presumptuous?
Stop! I am not asking you to be the Creator. We all know that God Almighty is the sole Creator.
But in a relative sense, God has endowed us all with the gift of creativity. Each one of us has the ability to create something new, something different. So, in our own little way, we are all little creators.
And by definition, a creator is someone who initiates, originates or produces something…
I have a friend who happens to be a chef. One night, while paying him a visit, I overheard him calling out some peculiar dishes which I assumed purely exotic. Then when I asked him where he had ‘stolen’ them from, he said that he had created them himself.
I was like: ‘Jeez! You created them?”
And he was like: “Uh huh…”
“Amazing!” I said.
Creating new dishes! That sounds like fun! But I am not new to the whole concept. When I am in the mood, and by accident I land in the kitchen, I find a way of spicing up boring dishes by adding a bit of that and this, or cooking them in a manner that I have never tried to before. The end result is amazing—something new, something exotic… it’s indeed amazing what you can do if you put your thinking cap on…
Like I said, we are all creators—in our own little way. And we all try to express our creativity in various ways. Others are sculptors, painters, poets and musicians; and other are writers… whatever profession or occupation you find yourself in, there is always room for creativity. Let’s take Charlie as an example.
Charlie is a business man. He is the marketing manager for a major mobile network service providing company. But recently things have become a bit harsh. Several competitors have shown up from apparently nowhere, and they are ‘stealing’ customers. So in a meeting, Charlie suggests that it is time to do something new, something different, in order to attract the customers back.
“ If we award our customers randomly with gifts of appreciation…you know, just give them something once in a while that shows that we are grateful to them for being our customers, we might just win their hearts. If we simply show that we appreciate our customers, we will win them back in no time. So I propose that we give out gifts randomly with no strings attached.”
So the company tries this proposal, and in no time, the customers start coming back. Charlie’s creativity has paid off.
It is true, in our own little way, that we are creators, endowed with creativity that elevates us above all other creatures. And writers are creators, great creators.
Remember I asked you to imagine that you are a creator with the capacity to create your own world with your own people, and manipulate these people in any way that you can? Well, if you are a writer, you have such power. Being a creator is not just a far-fetched fantasy but a reality.
Be a creator, be a writer, and you have a whole world at your finger tips. You have endless possibilities before you. You can create a whole new world—virtually yours, and after you are done, you can take us along for a tour as you show us sights that we have never seen; as you cause us to hear sounds that we have never heard before…
Writers have conjured up worlds of different creatures; a world of castles, princes, dragons, giants and monsters; a world where ultimately good always triumphs over evil; a world where animals rule; a world of big bad wolves and charming little girls; a world where the foolish die before their time and the wise thrive; a world where one can say, without fear or doubt, that they lived happily ever after…
Isn’t it always a pleasure to take excursions into these worlds once in a while and forget about our own dying world?
Indeed, when you are a writer, you are only limited by your imagination; but as we have come to agree, the imagination has no limits. So be a writer. let your mind soar and take you places. See, hear, feel, create….
Be a writer, be a creator, and feel it—the power of creativity. It lies within the soul of each and every individual; unfathomable, waiting to burst out and change something, alter something—our lives. Unleash that power that the creator has endowed you with. It’s not an impossible feat, but a possible possibility!
In conclusion, let me just echo these appropriate words:
Be a writer - the writer you have always dreamt of being.
